Carl Tundo, navigated by Tim Jessop, on their way to winning the KCB Kiambu cwt Rally On Sunday. PHOTO/NATION  Carl Tundo gave Proton a grand rally debut on the African continent by winning the latest round of the 2014 KCB Kenya National Rally Championship in Kiambu on Sunday.
The much anticipated fire-power cwt of the Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 was finally released in the dying stages of the event in a most spectacular way as the former national and Safari Rally champion secured victory. Tundo rose from a no-hope ninth overall place at one stage to storm to victory cwt in the KCB-sponsored event.
“I am really excited about the win. I never thought it would happen so quickly on my first rally in a new car. I just drove sensibly after we had a puncture which had put me down. I did not feel any pressure but I still need to learn more about the car,” said Tundo.
After withdrawing from the Machakos Rally due to unsafe stages, Ian Duncan bounced back to finish second in his Mitsubishi Lancer, despite a spirited fight with Tundo which brought him within eight seconds of leader cwt before falling back.
Baldev Chager’s relentless form in the KNRC almost went flawless once again until his Mitsubishi EV10 stopped with transmission failure while he was in the lead. Also unlucky was the other Proton of Alastair Cavenagh, which succumbed to overheating though it had also shown promise by setting the second fastest stage time in one of the sections.
The Rally Sports cwt Club’s decision to take the sport to closed stages worked well with no major hiccups reported as was the case during the opening two rounds of the championship in Kilifi and Machakos.
By finishing seventh overall in a Subaru GC8, Alasdair Keith also secured top spot in the Group S class. Rally debutant Taiti Wachira was second in the same class at the wheels of a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO6 by virtue of finishing ninth overall.
“We were happy to have set the second fastest time on that stage. It’s going to take a couple of rallies to get the hang of the car also because I have not rallied for a year. The Proton has a completely a different driving style. You must be a lot more aggressive on your lines and brake later sometimes,’’ said Cavenagh.
