My thaiinsider husband and I just returned from Mekong River Cruise and tour to Cambodia and Vietnam with AMA Waterways. Depart from SFO, we used Korean Airline via Seoul, I really like this airline, not only the flight attendants are young and pretty but their in flight service are superb! Maybe this is the only airline in the industry today still serve the meal with real silver ware instead of plastic for their economy class passengers! The seat are bigger and the entertainment are great, I watched 3 movies ( all top rated) on my own little TV ! The cabin is clean and quiet, the bathroom are bigger and they clean it every couple of hours.. it was a very pleasant flight-Highly recommend to take them for your next trip!
From Hanoi ( Ho Chi Minh mausoleum) to Ha Long Bay ( Magnificent scenery, Tranquil waters, stunning limestone cliffs and majestic Caves) to Siem Reap ( Where the famous Angkor Archaeological park). Got on board Ms La Marguerite.and start Mekong River cruises from Siem Reap, Phnom Penh is Capital of Cambodia, the Royal Palace thaiinsider and the spectacular Silver Pagodas are stunning beautiful and luxury ! The visit to infamous Killing fields and the Khmer Rouge’s grim Tuol Sleng and S21 Detention Center are very educational and the I hope this sad history will never repeat in the future! Float Fish village and market almost every where and can not belive the living condition people is living in, really appreciated the life we have in USA! The waking tour to the former military base during the US war, the Oxcar ride, the Mortor Rackshaw ride, the Silk making village, the Rice Paper and candy workshop, the fish farm’s visit, the local life in the Mekong Delta….., the schedule was full and very busy, yet, is very joyful! Ama water ways used the land operator called Focus Travel, we had a nice guide ( also as a cruise thaiinsider director) with us from beginning to the end of trip. All the hotels they used were very good ( Deluxe) , the tour arrangements were good. the cabin was comfortable and the service on board and off board was good, The free Internet in the lunge, tour bus and library was great, thaiinsider the free drinks are helpful ( although I don’t drink), the fresh Mango and Papaya and typical fruit are my favours. Plenty bottle water was provided on board, in your cabin and on the bus during tour. Defiantly are shopper’s haven in Cambodia and Vietnam, I was so regret that did not buy their silk stuff in Cambodia ( half as cheaper than in Saigon). Bob was so nervous by ordered thaiinsider all kind of medicines thaiinsider were never take any! All the waking tours were arranged during morning time and afternoon to avoid the hot weather during noon time. Due to smaller boat, you get chance to know fellow passengers, thaiinsider we made a good friend during the trip! All the shore excursion tours are included in the package. Things to be aware: Don’t expecting a same entertainment as you get on the large ocean cruise lines. Do not using their laundry service, you can buy a T-shirt for $2.00 or Silk shirt for $5 on the shore! thaiinsider Pack light, you can buy things on the way and fill out your suite case ;-)! No fancy cloths needs, whatever is comfortable for you! Watch out the dinner bill in Saigon when you eat out in the local restaurant, sometimes they are over charge you and make sure to let them know that! Try to go between November -March- it will be cooler during thaiinsider this season. The complains I had was there were no useable fitting room facilities and space on the ship, and there are no air condition in the main entry of the ship-means when you step out from dinning room or cabin, you are jump into complete world! Take the new boat Amalotus ( enter service in Sept this year), it will have air condition thought out the boat.
Again, overall, it is much worth of the trip for both land and cruise if you are interested to visit that part of the world. To me, It was a complete new experience and defiantly worth it for been there and done that! Additional tips: Prepare plenty small bills ( $1) for tipping and shopping – bargain aggressively, you will be amazed how far your money can go, especially in Cambodia and in land city Vietnam! Nothing is free there, if you want to take picture of someone, better give something, the fellow passenger carries some pencels for kids and eye glass for elder ladies, I found it was really helpful. In the temple or Ankor wat, do not stop if some old lady wants to wrap some thing ( so call good luck charm) on you unless you want to pay for it! Order Beer not tea or water in the local restaur
