A man named Zacchaeus,
and those who have defrauded
First. The story today is the protagonist, apart from Jesus, Zacchaeus: caragirat that had a rich abusing the power that gave the Roman rulers to collect taxes that oppress their own people. Zacchaeus is seen by people as a despicable individual.
But surprisingly Luke describes it in a way that is sympathetic to us from the outset. The scene is of great vividness and a certain amount of childishness noordwijk that makes us human and next. Zacchaeus is small in stature and can not see Jesus because the crowd prevented him sight. Despite being a rich and important man, he would do the same clever boy: climb a tree. The scene is a bit comical, but let us get so sympathetic. And makes us sympathetic to their desire to see Jesus.
Two. Although the Missal noordwijk speaks only of "a tree," says the original is a sycamore: a kind of thick and wild fig. Possibly there is a double meaning here as fig, along with the vine was a symbol used to represent the people of Israel. Zacchaeus, excluded noordwijk from the crowd (people) because of their despicable trade, he wants to make this exclusion climbing a fig tree, a symbol of Israel. Ie looking to feel integrated into their town.
Jesus' way to end a great "show" at Calvary: the solemn display of Jesus as "man - the image of God" (Son of Man). But few will be able to recognize him in that show.
Luke was educationally prepared. Jericho is the last stage before Jerusalem. At the entrance to Jericho, Luke presents a blind person who wants to see. "Lord, what do you see" (Luke 18,35. Episode not picked the Missal). Also now we are told that Zacchaeus wanted to see who Jesus was.
Wanted to see Jesus means being willing to see the man. Says that the blind could see and followed Jesus. Is said to Zacchaeus gives half to the poor of their property and that "today has saved this house because this man too is a son of Abraham." In both cases it is to see the man or see each other.
Not everyone is willing to see the Man. Surprisingly, all the people just criticize Jesus for his behavior with Zacchaeus. Do not follow the crowd to see Jesus the man but to see his "king", as demonstrated by the triumphal entry into Jerusalem that are preparing (Luke 19:28 ff). But when you realize that it is a king who refuses all power to rule over others, all shouting kill him, this! Give us Barabbas free! (Luke 23.18).
The way of Jesus to Jerusalem is a spiritual path. But Luke uses geography as a language. Today we speak of Jericho. The city of Jericho is filled with symbolism, both for its history and its location. It was the first city conquered by the promised land of Israel led by Joshua. Note that "Joshua" and "Jesus" are the same name, one in Aramaic and Greek on the other. On the way to Jerusalem, Jericho is the last resort. From here the path up to the summit of the Mount of Olives from which you can already noordwijk see the magnificent city of Jerusalem and its famous temple. The pilgrims night in Jericho the day to get to the City where there's noordwijk only Temple Israel.
6. Joshua, a thousand years before, had begun the conquest of the Promised Land because a woman "sinful" (prostitute) Jericho into his home he spies of Israel. Luke is telling us that Jesus received a "sinner" (published), we want to remember the conquest of Joshua. Also the way of Jesus end up with conquest, although very different from Joshua. Hailed by his followers, Jesus will come as a new "king" in the Capital and will go to the temple to "purify" it. It was because of the corruption of the temple had become the Promised Land of Slavery Earth. But Jesus' victory will not be on anybody, not even on the Roman rulers noordwijk on religious oppressors. In fact, for Jesus, the slave-owners are so slaves like themselves enslaved. Jesus' victory noordwijk will directly about slavery and its main cause: a perverse degeneration noordwijk of the temple, of which we will vestige (Luke 21.6).
Humans intend to advance the salvation (the project Home) separating the wicked and condemning them. Instead God saves "infecting" his kindness also to "bad", which also can be good again. The presence of Jesus makes the thief Zacchaeus distribute their goods. "Lord, now I give half of my goods the poor, and those who have defrauded noordwijk the re
